FAQs

Simple answers to common questions.

Where do the ratings come from?

The ratings come from the Food Standards Agency open data. We refresh the data every week when new inspection results are published.

How often is the data updated?

We update weekly when new inspection results are published.

How does a rating work?

Inspectors look at hygiene, cleanliness, and food handling. A higher score means better standards on the day of inspection.

When is a rating given?

Ratings are given after an inspection by the local authority. New results are published once they are confirmed.

Why does a rating matter?

It helps you make a quick, informed choice and see whether a business meets hygiene standards.

Do you cover the whole UK?

Yes. The map includes England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.

How much coverage is there?

We cover all published records in the Food Standards Agency data, which includes most public food businesses.

What is a 5 rating?

A 5 means the business met hygiene standards very well at the time of inspection.

What do 0 to 2 ratings mean?

0 to 2 means improvements are needed. The business should work with the local authority to raise standards.

Is this the official FSA site?

No. We use official open data, but this is an independent map built for quick checks.

Can I search by postcode?

Yes. Use a postcode, area name, or restaurant name.

Why can I not find a place?

Some places are new, closed, or not yet published. Try a wider area or check back later.

Why was this built?

We wanted a simple way to check hygiene ratings on a map without extra steps.

Are ratings the same across the UK?

Scotland uses a different scheme, but we show it alongside FHRS ratings.

Do you show delivery only kitchens?

If they appear in FSA data, they will appear on the map.

Can businesses update their rating here?

No. Ratings are set by local authorities after inspections.

Is the map free to use?

Yes. You can use it without an account.
